Analysis of cable sheath earthing options of 110 kV cable connection TS Dobri - TS Kastela

Abstract

The cable connection TS Dobri - TS Sucidar will be made of 110 kV single-core cables with XLPE insulation. It consists of three sections (two underground and one submarine). The underground part of the route has a trefoil arrangement of single-core cables, while in the submarine part it is planned to lay them in a plane with a distance between the conductors of about 25 m. Due to its design, the mentioned cable connection represents a non-homogeneous line. In practice, accepted design solutions generally prefer grounding both ends of the cable screens/sheaths, which reduces the voltages induced in them. However, this can result in relatively high screen/sheath currents that flow not only during single-pole faults but even during normal symmetrical operation. This paper analyzes different grounding schemes for the screens/sheaths of 110 kV cables from the point of view of the magnitude of the sheath currents.
