3D FEM Temperature Distribution Analysis of the Human Eye Exposed to Laser Radiation

Abstract

This paper is an extension of a previously published work on thermal modelling of the human eye exposed to radiation by various lasers. 2D model is now extended to 3D in order to give more realistical representation of the human eye model when irradiated by laser. The model is based on space-time dependent Pennes’ bio-heat transfer equation  solved by the finite elements method featuring Galerkin-Bubnov procedure. The results for the temperature field inside the eye could prove to be useful in minimising the possible damage to intraocular tissues during the ophtalmological procedures and also later in analysis of laser-tissue interaction mechanisms. Also, analysis of various parameters on the calculated temperature distribution is carried out.
