Medium voltage cables partial discharge diagnostics

Abstract

In this paper, we described the basic principles of measuring partial outbursts (PI) of cables by off-line and on-line methods, and clarified the basic terms for understanding and using this method. Considering the large number of cables in the distribution network, it is not realistic to expect that all cables are diagnostically analyzed in detail. For this purpose, it is useful to make an online pre-selection of the cables on which a more detailed diagnostic analysis will be carried out using a PI manual detector. Selected stocks are analyzed in detail off-line, using the PI diagnostic device. PIs in the cable can be located by analyzing the measured data. With other diagnostic methods, we get a general insight into the state of insulation, while PIs usually have a local character. In this way, we can locate a poorly made clutch or cable head and replace them preventively.
