Electromagnetic Model of the External Lightning Protection System

Abstract

This paper demonstrates how an existing transient electromagnetic model of grounding system can be employed to model the entire external lightning protection system, i.e. the air-termination system, the down conductor system and the earth- termination system. The presented model is a fixed-image based electromagnetic model which utilizes an originally developed transformation procedure between the time and frequency domains. The soil in which the grounding system is buried is approximated by a horizontally stratified multilayer medium.
